MSD Risk Reduction Awards Recognise Safety Innovation

The MSD Risk Reduction Awards have recognised two UK companies for their outstanding contributions to workplace safety through ergonomic design. These awards, presented at the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) annual ceremony on 28 April 2025, are supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and celebrate efforts to reduce musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risks in daily operations.

Ainscough Crane Hire: MSD Risk Reduction in Heavy Maintenance

Ainscough Crane Hire received the 2024/25 MSD Risk Reduction through Design Award for its innovative brake and hub assembly tool set. This equipment eliminates the need for manual lifting of components weighing up to 52kg, significantly reducing strain on maintenance workers and improving safety during crane servicing.

“Reducing physical strain has been a key goal,” said a company spokesperson.
“Our engineering and maintenance teams collaborated to design tools that eliminate manual handling of heavy parts.”

A team member added:

“The new tools make brake checks much simpler. We no longer need two people to lift the drums by hand.”

UPM Raflatac Ltd: Ergonomic Reel Handling Innovation

UPM Raflatac Ltd, based in Scarborough, received the SME Recognition Award for its innovative trolley system designed to handle paper reels weighing between 20kg and 90kg. The idea originated from a frontline worker and was developed by the production and engineering teams to eliminate manual lifting and stacking of offcut reels.

“This was a collaborative effort,” said a UPM Raflatac representative.
“Our solution transformed how we handle materials and reduced MSD risks.”

Celebrating Design Excellence in Workplace Safety

Chris Quarrie, Chartered Ergonomist and chair of the judging panel, commented:

“These projects show how thoughtful design can remove MSD risks from everyday tasks. Both companies have set a great example.”

Iris Mynott from CIEHF added:

“These awards highlight the value of ergonomic thinking in workplace safety. Congratulations to the winners and all who entered.”
